On Friday, May 3rd, Paseo Originals Art Gallery will open a solo exhibit featuring the works of Michelle Himes McCrory. McCrory's mixed media creations integrate traditional printmaking techniques with a variety of other drawing and painting media; allowing her to showcase the vast expanse of media she commands. Michelle's creations are representational and narrative in nature with subtle vintage suggestions that challenges each composition's place in the present.
Michelle Himes McCrory was born in 1978 in Stillwater, Oklahoma. Her childhood was filled with frequent relocation, and as a result, has lived in many states around the country including Oklahoma, Texas, Missouri, Pennsylvania, Utah, and Oregon. Michelle’s art education began with two years of study at Pacific Northwest College of Art in Portland, Oregon where she studied illustration and printmaking. A desire to be closer to her family led her back to Oklahoma. She graduated with a fine art degree from Oklahoma State University in 2005, with an emphasis on printmaking and watercolor painting. Michelle is currently working as an artist and instructing arts courses at Oklahoma State University.
Michelle has been a printmaker for eleven years working in lithography, woodblock, intaglio, and monoprint. For many years printmaking allowed her to work with traditional methods while also incorporating modern technology and new techniques. Her latest work merges painting and mixed media on panels. Working on Claybord, Michelle utilizes methods that are traditionally used for printmaking. With woodblock carving tools she meticulously creates shallow grooves in the panel, combing a subtractive method along with her painting. Michelle’s artwork is often autobiographical in nature, but she also finds inspiration from many places including the Oklahoma landscape and antique photo albums that she has collected over many years. In often phantasmal scenes the artist pairs her memories with the momentoes of strangers creating images which tend to blur time and create cross cultural narratives with macabre undertones.
The opening reception for “Drawing on the Past” will open Friday, May 3rd from 6:00-10:00 PM during the Paseo First Friday Art Walk. The exhibit will run May 3rd through June 1st. The exhibit and all associated events are free and open to the public.
