Innocence Lost Performance Art Series - Rafflesia Arnoldi

PRESS RELEASE

Performance Artist Valerie Sharp will debut the first of her four-part performance art series at Kasum Contemporary Fine Art this May 13th, at 8:00 PM during the Plaza District’s monthly LIVE on the Plaza. The four-part performance art series will explore one’s loss of innocence. Each performance will be a passing experience in time and space; featuring a repetitive durational act. Each act will use materials of the earth, digging deep into our instinctual selves, while layering on a sense of ritual to both merge and contrast the natural and cultural influences around us.

Valerie Sharp is a performance artist from Oklahoma City with a BFA in Acting and BA in Studio Art from Oklahoma City University. She creates performances that are usually durational and meditative, consisting of one or a few symbolic acts repeated over a determined period of time, with focus on the visual, sculptural aspects of performance. She has performed nationally at venues including Grace Exhibition Space, NYC, NY (21ST SUFFRAGETTES: INTERNATIONAL PERFORMANCE ART BY WOMEN), Rosekill Farm for Performance Art, Kingston, NY (Rosekill International Performance Art Festival and ESSENTIAL DEPARTURES), in Oklahoma City at Momentum 2015 and Oklahoma Shakespeare in the Park on Paseo for a solo exhibition.

The first two pieces in Sharp’s series, Refflesia Arnoldii and Middlemist Camellia, will focus on a loss of innocence in adulthood. The final two pieces, Lotus Berthelotii and Silene Tomentosa, will focus on loss of innocence in childhood. Each performance is intended to expose the tension of the spoken against the unspoken, the pieces of self given away, and the trails that are inevitably left behind. In the culmination of the series, the performance artist’s personal experiences will be transformed into universal symbols.

The series of performances will be hosted at Kasum Contemporary Fine Art. Kasum’s eclectic consortium of represented gallery artists are defined by their provocatively bold artworks which challenge the observer as much as the artist; be it through technique, concept, emotion or the sheer deafening volume of compassion behind the work. It is the founders’ philosophy that while anyone can create art, artists are rare; true artistry exists in the conception, the delivery and the drive to exceed the expected in all capacities. The gallery features exhibit receptions, lectures, demonstrations, pop-up exhibits, interactive installations, special performance events and seasonal patron events. The establishment is open Tuesday through Thursday from 11:30am – 7:30pm, Friday from 11:30am – 8:30pm, Saturday from 11:30am – 7:30pm, Sunday from 1:00pm – 5:00pm and from 11:30am to 10:00pm every second Friday for the Plaza District’s LIVE on the Plaza Arts and Culture Walk.
